Tips for nailing your next video interview

August 7, 2025

Video interviews have now replaced the old school phone interview. I know that most of us are pros at this point when using this technology. However, catching up with your Aunt is an entirely different experience than a high pressure interview. Here are a few tips to help you crush your next virtual interview.

1. Looking at your camera is the same as looking your interviewer in the eye. You will be tempted to look down at your screen to make sure your hair is ok but resist that urge.

2. Always dress in formal business attire, at least from the waist up. It's still a face-to-face interaction, even if you're in your basement a thousand miles from your interviewer so dress the part.

3. Make sure your set up is in a quiet place and with no distactions. Keep other people and pets from wandering through the room and a neutral background is always best. Good lighting is also important. If the main source of light is behing you, your face will be in the shadows.

4. Close all windows and programs on your computer. A dinging notification popping up can break the momentum.

5. It's ok to have notes or post-its off camera but don't read of them. They are just there for reminders not to be used as a script

6. Be sure to test your speaker and microphone before you click "Join Meeting". You might even want to reset your WI-FI before to make sure your connection is strong.

7. It's still a face-to-face interaction so body language is important. No slumping at the keyboard like we all normally do. Good posture and relaxed shoulders!

8. Always keep your interviewer engaged in the conversation. Pause periodically. Make it a 2-way converation.Too much talking on your part can drive them to check all those emails that keep popping up in their inbox.

9. Close your interviewer and send them a follow-up email before the sun sets on the day of the interview. A close is not just "is there any reason why you wouldn't move me forward in the process." Take that last step and let them know you like everything you have heard and want the next interview.

Best of luck!
